I’m guessing the footage was made to serve as plates for backscreen projections in movies. Now over time, it has become a precious and magical evocation of bygone times.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the sharing. This is probably 1946, since the films in the theaters are “Gilda” with Rita Hayworth and “The Outlaw” with Jane Russell (apparently during its controversial re-release). I love the cars, too — it looks like there are a lot of older models.
