I had never heard of Aivazovsky and then one day in 1988 I went to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg (the city was still called Leningrad then), and found myself mesmerized by his stunningly beautiful maritime paintings. Fortunately the museum had for sale an English language version of a book about Aivazovsky with many reproductions of his paintings, so I bought a copy and have treasured it ever since… though reproductions are a poor substitute for the real thing. 😉
Thanks for the shout-out, Lloyd. Here’s the entire gallery for anyone interested: http://uncouthreflections.com/2013/10/22/virtual-art-gallery-du-jour/
Thanks, Bryan!
