You’d think that a Julie Andrews Christmas album couldn’t help but be a classic but this one isn’t. Andrews’s interpretations have a a prim and prissy quality that robs them of warmth. I have the same feeling about Joan Baez’s Christmas album.

JB’s NOEL is an odd stew but the opening track (“O Come, O Come Emmanuel”) is terrific.
I like the album o. k. and play it, but it doesn’t get a lot of rotation in my Christmas playlist. The singing is pretty but not moving to me.
I feel the same way about Diana Krall’s Christmas offering. It’s good, perhaps too good, slick, and crafted.
My favorite Christmas music at the moment is by Mark Lanegan’s EP ‘Dark Mark Does Christmas 2012’, a disc available only at his concerts, It’s my middle of the night through the mists Christmas album. Might not sound very uplifting but it works for me. Just six songs but the feeling runs deep throughout.
That sounds cool, Nelson. Darkness and Christmas go together. There was no room at the inn.
